Ceramic vs Steel Bearings: Truth, Myth and the 10PLUS Premium

Ceramic bearings are real engineering, but the marketing around them often runs ahead of the evidence.

The truth

Ceramic bearings can offer low friction and a smooth feel. That doesn't mean a ceramic wheelset makes you several watts faster in every real-world situation.

Across a whole bike, tyres, chain, riding position and wind can easily outweigh the small contribution from the bearings.

What 10PLUS changes

Both tiers use S&S-branded bearings, according to 10PLUS's own spec: steel cartridges on the T Series, ceramic on the E Series. The E Series adds a 45T ratchet and a lighter build to its ceramic bearings; the T Series pairs its steel bearings with 36T engagement.

So the sensible comparison is T versus E as complete wheelsets, not steel versus ceramic bearings in isolation.

The marketing myth

Be wary of claims that ceramic bearings “add power”. Bearings reduce losses; they don't create watts. And a freehub that feels faster isn't the same as more power at the pedals.

The E Series can still be worth buying. The point is to know what you're paying for.

The buying rule

For the best value, the T Series. For the lighter premium package — if you're happy to pay for it — the E Series. That's the honest 10PLUS bearing story.
